Edward Gorey clearly enjoyed books - not just the words, but
also the aesthetic and tactile appeal of them. Indeed, he evidently had a passion for all media, being an avid TV (soap!) fan, keen movie buff, and an obsessive fan of the ballet (New York City Ballet in particular).
