A great deal has been written about Edward Gorey, particularly since his uninvited death in April, 2000, aged 75. I'll say a few words here, but I direct you
to some of the sites on my links page for much more detail. See also Gorey obituaries via Google search.
In his early days, Gorey made a living working at Doubleday publishers, producing typography and illustrations for book jackets and paperback covers. This developed his
illustration and design skills and set up many lifelong contacts.
Probably most people in the USA familia r with Edward Gorey came to know him through the animated sequences - based on his graphics - used on the PBS TV series Mystery!
, starting in 1980. He'd already gained public prominence with his set and costume designs for the 1977 Broadway production of Dracula, for which he won a Tony Award.
The Unstrung Harp, or Mr Earbrass Writes a Novel was the first of his own books to be published, all the way back
in 1953. Getting it published was a struggle. A prolific career followed, with great support from the people at The Gotham Book Mart (now sadly closed down), and Bromer Booksellers.
There's still more to come from Gorey, as preparation goes on for what is set to be a fascinating documentary from Mooncusser, and a feature film of The
Doubtful Guest. The latter is indeed dubious, but we wait to see...
